FSO performs "The General" to capacity houses
19 March 2012
At Farnham Maltings last Saturday, the FSO performed live orchestral accompaniment to the Buster Keaton silent comedy "The General". Both the matinee and evening events had capacity audiences whose appreciation of the performances was evident. The exciting Carl Davis score and the consummate skill of conductor, Mark Fitz-Gerald, contributed to a cinematic experience unlike any other.
With interwoven cannon fire, bugle calls, civil war songs and dramatic sound effects, Carl Davis's intricately constructed score underlined the action of the film and highlighted Buster Keaton's classic humour, to the evident delight of the audiences. The conductor, Mark Fitz-Gerald's intimate knowledge of the score enabled the live music to be coordinated with the film with extraordinary precision. For the FSO, it was an unusual and profoundly satisfying concert.
