Concert imageThe opening concert of the 10/11 season features Rimsky-Korsakov's dazzlingly orchestrated Scheherazade, a symphonic suite based on episodes from The Arabian Nights. The challenging violin solos will be played by our own leader, Tessa Welford. Another major work in the concert is Tchaikovsky's Symphony No 2 in C minor. One of the composer's most joyous works, it was successful on its premiere and was nicknamed the "Little Russian" because of the three Ukranian folk songs which feature throughout. The opening work in the concert, Verdi's overture "The Force of Destiny", will ensure a memorable start to the new season.

Verdi : Overture La Forza del Destino
Tchaikovsky : Symphony No.2 in C minor
Rimsky-Korsakov : Scheherazade

Concert imageOur first concert of the New Year features young Royal College of Music prizewinner, Tom McLauchlan, who will be the soloist in Rodrigo's famous Guitar Concerto. The 'Concierto de Aranjuez' was written in 1939 and was described by the composer as capturing "the fragrance of magnolias, the singing of birds, and the gushing of fountains" in the gardens of Aranjuez. A work of great maturity, it promises to transport us on a chilly winter evening to the warmth of a Spanish spring. By contrast, Schubert's "Tragic" Symphony was written in 1816 when the composer was only 19. Strongly influenced by Haydn and Mozart, the fact that this early work is so gripping and effective in its own right is a testimonial to Schubert's extraordinary inventive gifts. Brahms' well known Variations on a theme by Haydn and the less familiar Overture Donna Diana by Austrian composer, Emil von Reznicek, round off an exciting programme.

Soloist: Tom McLauchlan (Guitar)

Reznicek : Overture Donna Diana
Brahms : Variations on a theme by Haydn
Rodrigo : Concierto de Aranjuez
Schubert : Symphony No.4 in C minor (Tragic)

March Concert - 2010/11 Season

Saturday 19 March 2011, 7.45pm
High Cross Church, Camberley, GU15 3SY

Tickets: £10.00
Children £5.00

Concert imageOur March concert features an exciting solo performance by an FSO player who rarely experiences the limelight: Chris Cozens our tuba player. He will perform Vaughan Williams' Tuba Concerto, a work originally commissioned to mark the Golden Jubilee of the London Symphony Orchestra. Beethoven's ever popular Pastoral Symphony is the other major work in the programme. Inspired by the composer's love of nature, the Symphony evokes flowing water, birdsong, a thunderstorm and a boisterous peasant dance. Excerpts from Mendelssohn's incidental music to A Midsummer Night's Dream and the overture to Mozart's operatic masterpiece, Don Giovanni, contribute to what promises to be a highly popular concert.

Soloist: Chris Cosens (Tuba)
Tuba, Farnborough Symphony Orchestra

Mozart : Overture: Don Giovanni
Mendelssohn : A Midsummer Night`s Dream Notes
Vaughan Williams : Tuba Concerto
Beethoven : Symphony No. 6 in F (Pastoral)

Concert imageOur final concert of the season is a Dvorak 'feast', featuring a number of popular favourites. It is a privilege to welcome Jonathan Ayling, one of the Principal Cellists from the London Philharmonic Orchestra, to play the Cello Concerto in B minor. Written towards the end of Dvorak's successful period in America, it interweaves influences from the New World’s young, vibrant culture with the composer's homesickness. The New World theme is ever present in the Symphony No. 9 which features a seemingly inexhaustible flow of melody and sparkling orchestration. The three Slavonic Dances which open the concert are rooted in Dvorak's Czech background and deservedly led to his recognition as an emerging composer.

Soloist: Jonathan Ayling (Cello)
Principal Cellist, London Philharmonic Orchestra

Dvorak : Three Slavonic Dances Notes
Dvorak : Cello Concerto in B minor
Dvorak : Symphony No.9 in E minor (New World)
