Our Next Concert

Saturday 22 November 2008, 7.45pm:
November Concert - 08/09 Season

The opening concert of the 08/09 season features one of the major works of the symphonic repertoire: Tchaikovsky's 6th symphony, whose music is charged with emotion made all the more poignant by its association with the composer's untimely death in 1893. By contrast, the Schumann Conzertstück for 4 horns is a more unusual piece, written at the height of the composer's creativity. A virtuosic showpiece for the horn soloists, for many years this work was considered unplayable and it promises to be an exciting opening for the FSO season. The concert also includes "Forest Murmurs" from Act II of Wagner's opera, Siegfried and "Tam O'Shanter", Malcolm Arnold's tone poem based on verse by Burns.

Celebrating 86 years of orchestral music-making

Orchestra

The Farnborough Symphony Orchestra serves the local community in North East Hampshire and is supported by organizations active in the district, including Rushmoor Borough Council and Slough Estates (the developers of the Farnborough Heritage Site). It aims to perform a varied programme of orchestral music to a high standard and provide its members with the opportunity to play a symphonic repertoire under a professional conductor.

Founded in 1922 as the Royal Aircraft Establishment Orchestral Society, it has a long history of performing in the local area and currently presents four concerts each season. Programmes often feature young soloists at the outset of their careers, or established artists.

Rehearsals are held on Thursday evenings in Wesley Hall, Farnborough, Hampshire. Membership, subject to requirements, is open to all amateur players of Grade 8 standard or higher.

The F.S.O. is affiliated to "Making Music" and is a registered charity (number 293178) proudly supported by
